I was born in Wallsend and went to Wallsend Grammar school, my dad and most of my family like many others in Wallsend either worked at the Rising Sun pit or at the Shipyards. I was the first person in my family to leave North Tyneside for university and because of this during my award winning teaching career, I always sought to work in communities with more challenges. I won many accolades and was even dubbed one of the first ‘superheads’ but the real winners were the children in the schools I worked in,  who had the opportunities to achieve more and get the outcomes they deserved.

When my teaching career was coming to an end I still wanted to do more and help people achieve their maximum potential. An opportunity arose and this led to me becoming a councillor in North Tyneside for the Riverside Ward, taking up the cabinet post for Children, young people and learning.

You elected me the Mayor in 2013 and I’ve been a Mayor for everyone, working with everyone in local communities across North Tyneside, leaving behind the politics of negativity and division. You gave me the opportunity to start the task of delivering on your priorities and making our area better. I delivered for North Tyneside making it a better place to live, work and visit.

In 2017 when I went back to the ballot box for your approval for a second term you returned me as the Mayor of North Tyneside with over 55% of the vote due to my record of delivery.

I am seeking the Labour Party’s nomination for a third and final term as your Mayor. While we have achieved so much in the last 7 years, we have more to do. Despite the terrible pandemic, I am still focused on delivering a better, fairer and greener future for our Borough,
